True Breathing air is “Type “D” Air” free of contaminants: Toxins, Oils, Particulate, Carbon Monoxide (CO2) Odor etc. of all, one of the worst is Carbon Monoxide because it is adsorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood easer than oxygen (O2) and blocks the adsorption of O2 thus putting you in an acute danger like a bad heat exchanger in your furnace poisoning you. The other contaminants are chronic taking many years potentially years with out any quality of life. The filtering of air prior to entry into the compressor will help remove oils and particulates but what are you not filtering out? What filters have you omitted? Commercial blaster and painters use a system after the compressor before the hood, it has several different types of filters removing various hazards, filters are changed by a certified person and the air is tested regularly purity. The NIOSH only says that item is approved, it doesn’t make the air good you still need to supply it with Type “D” air.
