Yep, stop leak is not going to work on anything more than a fine crack. But, it's worth a try.
On some trucks you have to open the air conditioning lines to replace the heater core. That kind of puts the project out of reach (at least for the A.C. part) of most shade tree mechanics.
I took an automotive air conditioning repair class as a local junior college. It was an interesting class and the skill has come in handy many times.
