For fun, I usually line up pieces of slate on the log and shoot them. No need to pick up the fragments that way. Also, few spray paint cans get tossed without being well perforated first. Sometimes I'll even try to shoot a pine cone out of the top of a tree (remarkably hard to cut the twig just behind the cone).
Believe me I don't shoot the rats for fun. I don't kill anything I don't have a good reason for killing, not even bugs, but the rats are worse because they're mammals, they have big brown eyes, they're warm and furry, they're all females and they're usually pregnant, and sometimes they only get one leg caught in the trap or I don't hit them in a vital spot, and then they suffer. I don't like it one bit. However, they are completely incontinent from both orifices, they gnaw continually on pretty much anything, but they seem to especially like wiring, hoses, clothing, and bedding. And of course they build their huge stinking leaf-pile nests and haul off anything up to and including a 12" steel spike. It's simply not possible to share any sort of space with a pack rat.
