Battery Tray Question

When I got my 6 volt FFPW it had a bracket welded inside the battery tray. It looks like it may have been a hold down for a smaller battery.

I now see a similar battery tray on Ebay. What was the purpose of the extra bracket? Did 6 volt trucks come with a smaller battery originally?
