In the case at point, it lets the needle get right next to the foam.

But generally to sew vinyl you want a roller foot. Vinyl has lots of friction, rollers help.

So far as the diagonal butt joint, at the point you want a 4" wide strip 10 feet long. The end seam should be diagonal.

Sewing is a lot like working sheet metal. Except you don't make butt joints, they are all lap joints. They call the laps 'selvage'.

I do all my sewing on the Power Wagon of home sewing machines, a Singer 201. All cast iron, circa the same era, 40s-60. No zig zag. While it can goes backwards, it usually keeps going straight ahead, and has for 60 years. $20 at a garage sale.
