I have an alternator a sno-cat that wouldn't kick in at any reasonable RPM, so I rigged a "tickler" circuit consisting of a diode and resistor from the ignition circuit pointing to the actual field terminal internal to the alternator (the alternator output lead is downstream of some diodes that drop too much voltage for the regulator to pick up. The tickler puts a little current into the field whenever the ignition switch is on (the resistor limits it) so that the alternator will kick in. Once it's generating, the diode blocks the circuit and the regulator regulates normally. I know this is a patch but it works fine, it's simple, and it put an end to a lot of frustrating troubleshooting. Most likely I have an alternator that simply isn't made to work at such low RPMs. If the tickler should fail when I'm out in the boonies, I carry a piece of wire I can use to flash the field just like you'd do on an old DC generator, to get it to kick in after starting the engine.
