You can have the alternator adjusted so it kicks in at a lower RPM. I have a single wire alternator and it really was not keeping up. So the shop lowered the RPM at which it kicks in. No problems since. The rebuild guy said some can be set to kick in at over 2K which doesnt do much good. Mine now kicks in below 1K.
