Plenty of WW II Jeeps found their way into private hands after the war without any crap from DOT, because DOT really didn't exist then.
I happen to have personal knowledge of a fleet of over 100 government owned Mack trucks that got painted from Olive drab to green over a holiday week and went back to work with NY License plates on them the next week. When WW II closed down one hell of a lot of equipment the government owned was just abandoned where it sat, and nobody came looking for it later.
