Machining a nut

For those of you with the capability, what is really involved with making a nut?? This specific nut is for a Federal Signal Q2B siren. The nut is 1" in diameter, it has two notches for screwing it on, and its got counter clockwise threads.

This is a scarce part for the restoration of Q sirens so I think there would be a little bit of a market for them. Is it worth finding someone to re produce them??
