I've been running one on my first M37 for 10 years now and it's been working fine. Doesn't seem to get noticeably hot. I think what it loses by drawing twice the current (and 4X the heat) it gains by starting the engine a lot quicker with less prolonged cranking. Especially on a tired engine with a marginal spark, this is a big plus.

Bear in mind that it will draw twice the current at 12 volts that it did at 6, and that starter cables in 6 volt systems are usually heavier than in 12 volt systems. So, for best results, use good heavy cables. Otherwise most of the power will go into heating up the cables rather than cranking the engine.
