When the overdrive is off it's a direct drive unit and should have no issue with power going through it,unless
You have already damaged the "sprag" inside the unit,I think.

As far as oil Dennis and Gear Vendors which is a direct copy, recommended 80 W gear oil. But I have had better luck with 50 W Trans. oil in colder seasons.
That 50 W is also what's recommended on the British sites.
There is a small sump screen in the oil pan at the bottom that need to be checked and cleaned periodically.
