I see it was the fan belt, but I agree with Chris. If timing jumped the pistons may have slammed the valves and bent them in the open position. You would be able to tell if the rockers have excessive play and don't move as it cranks over. You could also see if this is a non-interferance engine to rule this out. Simple call to Chevy dealer if your lucky or a google search. All the valves should move.

If they "valves" do all move, and it cranks over starts then dies.... it most likely is that wonderful General Motors theft deterent safety interlock module near the keyswitch. My '99 truck has that issue every so often, starts then dies. I usually get mad at it and turn it on and off without cranking the engine over enough times that it resets and works for a few more months. Cussing at it is optional, but not very effective.
