The old coleman generator I had years ago had a plastic plate on the generator side, you remove it and there were terminals there. You were supposed to take a 6 volt lantern battery and stick it on the terminals to flash the field windings. On another generator one of my customers has, its an older 6500 watt honda. It lost its residual magnatism because he left it connected to the house when he turned his main breaker back on. The power company had reenergised. Thats what happens when you half A** a generator hook up. Anyway since the generator wasn't running it just tripped the circuit breaker. A honda tech told hime to take 12 volts off his starting battery and plug it into one of the outlets and crank the engine 4 turns with out letting it start. That flashed the field and it worked.
