Steve,

A couple of tips:

1) Clean the slip rings where the brushes ride. It is very common for these to be dirty or oxidized and prevent the genset from working. Use emery cloth or even sandpaper (fine grit) to clean them up. Raise and hold the brushes up off the slip rings and lightly touch the emery cloth to the slip rings while the engine is running. Keep doing it until the rings are nice and shiny. This likely will fix the problem.

2)If the genset has a voltage regulator, there should be two connections labeled F1, F2 or F+, F-. These connections send voltage to the field (rotating electromagnet). If you can find these connections, hook up 6 volts from a battery to them momentarily to see if the generator shows and holds output.

3) If there is no voltage regulator, the generator should have a transformer and rectifier to provide excitation. Find the dc+ and dc- connections on the rectifier and flash the fields there with 6 volts.

Good luck, hope this helps!
