Shortening a 70's 318 Water Pump?

I'm cross posting this from Gordon's PWA site.

Has anyone successfully shortened a long-nose water pump for a 318? I know Ray Suiter has done it, and I'm wondering if it's possible for me to do in-house? I have access to a lathe and a mill, and to people who know how to use them.
