That system was called the
Auto-Lite thermo magnetic fuel gauge.
It basically runs current from the gauge,through the sender,back to the gauge to heat a small bi-metal strip in the gauge to move the needle.
Find and old "Motors" manual for detailed operation and trouble shooting.
The gauge or sender are interchangeable with other systems.
I'm sure some antique car gauge re builders can repair/calibrate the system.
VPW sell a repro sender that works well after calibrated.
