As I recall IH was not bailed out by the Government. As part of negotiations due to a combination of very poor finances, serious upper management issues, and a labor strike they agreed to sell off the Agriculture division to the parent company of Case and those two merged. About a year or two later IH which kept the truck and engine divisions renamed and reorganized as Navistar because the IH name and trademark were sold as part of the Case merger.
