The Berlin Wall was erected 13 Aug 61. I was drafted 28 Aug 61. US 52 XXX XXX. Correct, US was prefix for draftee. "5" also denoted draftee. The "2" indicated I was drafted in the 2D Army area.

You'd think there was some connection between the Berlin Wall and my being drafted but I never was assigned to Europe/Germany.

You hear that enlistees got the good jobs and draftees ended up with the bad jobs. You also hear that the Army ignores civilian backgrounds and makes mechanics out of chefs. When I was asked about my civilian experience I replied that I played the saxophone and liked to talk. My first assignment was the US Navy School of Music to be an Army bandsman. That was rescinded and I was assigned for training as a Counterintelligence Special Agent and spent most of my 20 years in civilian clothes talking.

I liked my Army job and enlisted to stay in. My SN became RA but the 52 never changed. I retired 31 Jan 82.

Paul F. Cook, CW3, USA (Ret)

P.S. I did get to play with Army trucks from time to time when my additional duties included Motor Sergeant and Unit Maintenance Officer.
