Anybody still use a pit?

I still can't afford to built a proper garage, but if I ever do, I figured to build a pit into it. Simple, cheap, no moving parts, no way it can fail and kill you, and basically no weight or height limit. I realize the width has to be a compromise, and it doesn't help with getting large assemblies out the bottom, but for most work it would do the job just fine.

The other option would be a drive-up rack. There you'd have the ceiling clearance issues of a lift, and the width compromise of a pit, and some structural concerns regarding the weight limit, but it would be pretty easy to build one very sturdy, as well as inexpensively. If the vehicle wasn't drivable, it still wouldn't be hard to winch it up onto the rack.
