Around here a shovel is a "muck stick", and a sledge-hammer is a "double jack". You don't "clean out" your garage, you "muck it out".

But I learned a new one recently from a young fellow who's working at Stillwater. He told me "at Stillwater they paint your face for you". I couldn't figure out what that could possibly mean, so I finally asked him. It means the geologist comes in and marks with spray paint on the end of the stope (the "face") where you're supposed to drill, because the ore looks just like the waste rock, whereas in the mines here in the valley, the miners can tell by looking where the limits of the vein are so they can paint their own face prior to drilling. They spray a grid pattern on the face and drill at the intersection of the lines, except in the center where they drill a fancier pattern.
