DOc, The drums on the end of the winch shaft are probably cathead spools.They're made for soft rope.The way this works is you release the dogs (locking device on winch spool)This lets the winch shaft turn free.As you engage the PTO,the winch shaft & catheads will naturally start to rotate.By looping a soft rope around the rotating cathead,moderate loads can be lifted-moved ect.The number of loops around the head depends on the weight to be moved.Two-three loops are usually enough.Catheads can be pretty dangerous if not used properly.Ropes can bind & get things tangled up.....like you.Its kind of difficult to get to the clutch if your out on the bed.Maybe someone could help you a little than I on safety procedures.Hope this helps.
