Valve Train Noise

The engine on my 48 FFPW has a fairly loud clicking noise of the type I always associated with a loose tappet.

When I adjusted the valves, I was surprised to find that none of the tappets were especially loose and the clicking did not go away when I inserted the feeler gauge into each of the tappets.

I'm sure that it's valve train noise, but what will cause the loud clicking sound if it's not too much tappet clearance?
