I have never gotten really excited about modifications all that much, so I have never actually explored what you are trying to do, but I doubt that you will find any needle and seat assembly to fit that carburetor other than the style you currently have. The image I attached in one of my other posts showed the needle and seat that would have been original to that carburetor. The one you have may be an aftermarket with the spring assist needle (like Tom pointed out) but the seat is basically the same and is designed to have the fuel filter threaded onto it. I don't think there is a needle and seat assembly made for that carb that would allow the fuel line to be threaded directly into the seat. But back to your question, no, you can not connect a fuel line directly to the carb and leave the needle and seat off. Soon after startup the fuel would be flooding everywhere.

So, it sounds like your main goal is to get rid of the fuel filter. If so, I would be interested in it. I have a NOS needle and seat assembly (just like the one I pictured) that I would trade for the fuel filter if you cover shipping both directions. With this, you no longer have any small plungers or springs to worry about loosing. You would still have to figure out the correct threaded fittings to adapt the flared fuel line to the male pipe thread on the external end of the seat assembly.

As a side note, if you take that fuel filter/seat/needle as an assembly, tilt it so the needle and seat at facing down, and give it a shake and the triangle needle does not fall out, I think you have found the answer to your original problem - the needle is stuck inside the seat and not letting any fuel into the carburetor.
