Hi Dan, I posted your link over on the Yahoo 318 Poly and here is a question that came up.

Hi Gary
What was the reason for reversing the sump on the oil pan?
Glenn

Glenn,
I would say the rear sump is to clear the front axle on a W300 because it has an 8qt capacity vs the 6qt capacity on a W100/200. The pan is probably deeper. I just looked at my Poly W100 Town Wagon and it has a front sump. I have a 68 W300 with an LA318 and it also has a front sump, so go figure. The engine in the rebuild looks to be from a 58-60 W300 due to the front engine mount. The frame on the the earlier W300 may have curved in at the engine and so the front mounts attached to the front of the engine rather than the bosses on the side. 61 and on W300s had straight frame rails. Also the engine may have come from a D400-600 without the need for clearance and had a front sump originally.
My 2-bits anyhow,
Gar
