Ed if you have the nut removed from the pinion shaft then yes you will have some end and side play. Did you mark the nut to the flange and to the splines so that you can get it tight enough again. If not you'll need to torque it quite tight ( I think 300 ft-lbs) but please check this value as my books are not handy. The normal backlash when all assembled and tight should be 0.005-0.008" between the ring and pinion gears. With the seal installed it will be very hard to determine but a worn set of gears will have more backlash. If they ran alright before the seal change you should be good to go as long as the pinion nut is fully tightened. Good luck Terry.
