Soon after I first bought my current WDX in 1980, I started cleaning off 33 years of caked on grease and dirt from the running gear. What paint remained was black. But on the axle housings under the black paint, that was flaking off now that the petrified grease was removed, was red. Under where this red was scratched through was rusted steel. This was found on both complete axle housings except for one small area on each - the welded on differential covers. These were yellow under the black paint with rusted steel where the yellow was failing.

I thought that someone had painted my axle housings and differential covers at one time until about 10 years later when I spoke to another WDX owner and found out that they were finding the same colors. I then crawled under a parts WDX I owned and started scraping away the crud. Again, I found red axle housings with yellow differential covers - all under the remanents of black paint. My two WDX trucks were about 1000 serial numbers apart and had come from completely different areas of the country.

My only explanation is that they must have coated the axle housings with the same red oxide coating as found on the interior surfaces of the transmission and transfer case and the yellow differential covers must have had something to do with the welding fixturing process before the parts went to paint.

The trucks that I have owned later than model WDX have had none of this red or yellow that I have found.
