Shear would have been if the timing cover moved, since that is the joint at the block face. With the mount the thickness of the cover away from the block, the mount would have been trying to bend them back and forth, until they broke.

The real weak point is the flex in the 60 year old frame. Frame flexes,but the four rubber points are attached rigidly to the a huge iron monolith, the engine/bell housing combo. The front cover bolts can't keep the frame of a 5400 pound truck rigid in off road use. Plus those one ton rear springs probably are rusted together, no give there either.
