Sorry, I think on backfiring as popping back thru the carburetor. Your correct popping out the exhaust would be a bad exhaust valve or seat causing poor compression. Also could be a dead hole spark wise as Mike suggested. Without spark unburnt fuel would light off as it’s dumped into the exhaust flow of the other cylinders.
