The A.S.A.E. standards for the late 40's allowed the implement attaching hole in the drawbar to be located 1-inch off center (side to side) of the axis through the splined PTO output shaft.

Dodge centered up the drawbar on the truck and took advantage of the A.S.A.E. rule by locating the rear PTO pillow block 1-inch to the driver side.

I can see their logic in wanting to maintain the drawbar on the center line of the truck. I have seen no official explanation in any vintage Chrylser literature for why they located the Pillow Block the allowable 1-inch to the left. As Dan mentioned, I too believe the reasoning was to gain as much room between the rear PTO driveshaft and the fuel tank as possible.
