I'm thinking this is an old mechanic's tale. I've done this too after hearing stories when I was a kid. But, now I'm a little wiser, I wouldn't try it again.
I've also heard about pouring ground walnut shell done the carb. But, I'm not going to try this either.
I've also heard about periodically removing the head to clean carbon, but I haven't run across the recommendation in writing.
