Interesting thought, but the valves and pistons won't collide on a flat head like on an OHV engine.

I still don't understand why the keepers would come out if the engine is over-revved, if that's what happened. Seems like all the forces would be working to keep the keepers in.

Still, strange things happen, especially to springs, when they move faster than designed.

Is it possible that the valve is thrown up with such force that the spring collapses and the valve strikes the cylinder head and bounce off?
