I installed an 80's MileageMaster electronic ignition from Jacobs on my truck, and it made a very noticeable difference in starting on cold wet days. This unit has a switch that allows either electronic or non-electronic use, so you can carry on if the box fails.

I've never been a big fan of distributor-mounted electronic ignitions, because of my experiences with chip testing at National Semiconductor back in the 80's. National made ignition modules for Chrysler, and it wasn't unusual to lose 50% of a batch during thermal testing, if they'd added vibration, we'd probably have lost 100%.

Electronics need a good heatsink to dissipate internal heat, and vibration protection if you want them to last in harsh environments. You won't get that in a distributor, the electronics should be in a case that can be mounted in a cool area of the engine compartment, and the case needs to be sealed against water/dust entry, and provided with shock/vibration protection. Not cheap if done right, MSD makes a unit that can be used with points, the Jacobs MileageMaster unit has been out of production for years, but still comes up on Ebay occasionally.
