Sorry, but a handheld voltmeter should not get destroyed by sitting on top of a tool box in the sun. I used to work at Fluke. I used to design voltmeters for Fluke. I've had a Fluke meter in my tool box for 20 years and it's been fine despite all my "negligence". I recently decided to keep the Fluke one in the shop and put a "high end" Harbor Freight unit in the tool box in case it gets stolen or run over. One day in the sun and the plastic sticker front curled up and wrinkled, the screen got a big black splotch on it, and numbers that appeared on the screen became fairly random. If you crank on a ratchet wrench without a cheater bar and the ratchet strips out, is that negligence? If the teeth on a pipe wrench get rounded off the first time you use it on a pipe, is that negligence? There are certain basic things that tools are supposed to do, and one of them is to survive sitting out in the sun for a few hours (unlike ice cream).

In any case, the issue isn't whether I neglected to coddle it sufficiently or not. The issue is that they no longer honor any warranty unless you bring in the receipt. I went through this same game with Sears/Craftsman 20 years ago and the result was I quit buying stuff from them.

BTW I know you're just kidding about the man up part.
