Man, this Summer has sucked for us up here Kevin...the rain only stopped a week ago & I mean non stop November kind of rain.
I'm also not a fan of 100 degrees but a happy medium would be nice :)
Wheels are a bit of a problem for any kind of coating because you can't usually get into many areas to clean & blast properly where they're rivited together or welded & so you're always going to have rust leaching unless you were to use a seam sealer & paint...which would look like crap anyway. Powder coat is certainly more durable against mechanical damage & will adhere better than automotive paint to wheels if the right powder is used & prepped properly.
As far as chassis parts...there's just no chance that an automotive coating like say PPG or RM will compare to proper powder coating on something like an axle housing, steering parts or a frame. The cost is less than paying a bodyshop to do the same work & the results will be much better than paint for these types of applications.
There's a local company here building $6000 mountain bikes & every frame gets powder coated and trust me...cost is not the reason why. If they were painted with auto paint the coating would be destroyed in 1 week even if you used Endura or Dupont Imron. It's apples to oranges...sorry.
These guys in CA get good reviews but I don't know them. If I lived near by I'd certainly give them a try....
