Kevin,
I agree, it's always safest doing the work ourselves because we know exactly what to expect. That said it's not always the best way :)
And don't get me wrong...I'm not saying powder coating is a "better" way to restore a Power Wagon...in fact I personally prefer paint & single stage paint at that. I'll take plain old enamel over base clear any day but I'm just saying powder coating is very durable...more so than most paint unless maybe you're comparing it to zinc-rich epoxy primers or other marine epoxies that aren't visually pleasing & even then, I'd hazard a guess that good powder coat holds up better to mechanical damage...which is really what our trucks are subject to. I mean I don't really know anyone out driving their power wagon around in road salt & not even washing it off & if there is such a person...they likely don't care either way about the coating.
As for a shop...I can name you a couple in Canada that'll fix you up :)
Aluminum oxide is just the media...it's still shot out of a sand blaster :) We can't even use silica around here anymore & who would want to?
Here's the thing...good powder coaters are not likely going to be located in a small town. I mean you're going to have to seek them out & ship parts to them unless you're in a big city the same as you would if you were looking for a shop to do good chrome or anodizing. There's probably more in California than the rest of North America put together.
