Some transmission PTOs have 2 forward speeds and one reverse, built into the PTO, so in that case you would definitely want it so the forward speeds wind the cable in.

For the most success in self-recovery, you want both the PTO and transmission in gear, with the speeds of each set so that the winch is pulling the truck at the same speed that it would be going if the tires weren't slipping. That makes a big difference in getting unstuck compared to just using the winch alone
