Good to know it's possible to get them running well and easy to start. Would be nice to actually be able to start one with a rope, since after all it is an EMERGENCY generator. Is yours good enough that you can start it with the rope?

Maybe someday I'll put some more time into mine. I agree the flexible output configuration is neat. Also I like that they run at 1800 RPM which just by itself should make the engine last twice as long as the usual genset. The 24 volt military battery is impossible to find, and a pair of 12V golf cart batteries doesn't quite fit the holder. Maybe there are some others that would fit. The adjustments are good. I had a DC "jump-starter" version up and running pretty good at one point and had modified it so I could turn the voltage down to 12 volts for starting regular vehicles, while still retaining the 24 volt option for military vehicles. Still, it really wouldn't start with a rope, except in warm weather with ether, so that kind of defeated the purpose of it.

A Mule seems like a neat thing to have too, but they aren't cheap these days. Talked to an old-timer who described buying bunches of them from the government and scrapping them out because the platform was all magnesium and worth good money.
