I agree with this. I believe that the original components were well engineered and that you're overthinking this. Every differential that I've taken apart that was undisturbed since built (and I'll grant you that's only a half dozen or so) has been in "good nick" as the Brit's say, and every one that had been messed with (another half dozen or so) has had problems. The squishing is simply the lock tab conforming to full bearing. Personally I don't like lock washers or grade 8 in this application.

BTW the tapered pins are the primary problem that I've seen in previously opened differentials.
