Ethanol has an affinity for water, it is not like brake fluid but I know it will blend readily with water ( think drygas ) and above a certain percent will not burn. I don't know this for a fact but I assume boats have a sump at the bottom of the tank that may collect water over time and then when you put the ethanol in, the water gets absorbed in the ethanol and you have running issues. Probably not an ethanol problem exactly but it probably gives it a bad rap. I know they can't run E85 ethanol through pipe line because it will pick up too much water, they generally have to use trucks. It is one of the arguments that ethanol is not really reducing our dependence on foreign oil because distribution takes more energy.

This kind of makes me wonder if ethanol is better or worse for our steel gas tanks. It seems to me water settling to the bottom of the tank is what causes pinholes in the tank. If the ethanol absorbs this water in small quantities and it is contantly burned off you wouldn't have any collected water to cause the rust.
