A friend of mine who is a sheriff's deputy for the county tells the theives that come out city to our neck of the woods the following.
"Most every farmer around here has a backhoe and they use them all the time and at all hours and own 100's of acres. They don't take kindly to people stealing from them and if you come up missing I'm not wasting my time to look for you." He has relayed to me that it tends to make them stop and think.
