The bigger issue is dynamic loads.
I'm sure it would have been strong enough in vertical sheer since it relies on pure metal to metal contact and would be in double sheer with the back plate.
The harder thing to figure is what happens when that load bounces or jerks. The dynamic load will be much higher. I.e. it's not going to break under a nice steady pull or push, it will be under a shock load. Or in engineering speak it will be the second and third order forces (acceleration and jerk).
It would have probably been strong enough, just didn't want to prove it the hard way.
