Don't be so quick to dismiss the "foil" stuff. I just lined the fiberglass engine cowling in our cabover trolley bus with that stuff and it was absolutely amazing how much it cut the sound down. There are probably different kinds, but the kind we got has white plastic like visqueen on one side, then about 1/8-1/4" of foam, then a thin layer of very dense soft plastic (maybe lead-filled?), then a thicker layer of the same foam as the first layer, and then foil to reflect engine heat. I didn't know what to use to attach it so I used some 2-part epoxy heavy duty floor covering adhesive that I happened to have on hand. It was about 10 years old, so I mixed up a test batch to make sure it would still harden. Cut all the pieces to fit, spread the goo with a notched trowel, and it turned out great. I hope I never have to remove it, though.
