Do a search of Phil's archives and there is a wealth of info there for you on this.
Also, where do you live? If you live in the eastern half of the U.S. you can go to a country sawmill and get white oak cheap, any dimension you want. You can't do this with a retail lumberyard.
Mopar Norm has commented about some western species that are available at sawmills - in the archives I believe.
