The point of the plate is that tigthening the bolts distorts the cylinder walls, giving a more precisely round bore. Wouldn't you get a similar distortion without the plate, just bolts with heavy washers? Or maybe compromise, two 7" bars with three bolt holes each, across the block, fore and aft of each cylinder? Jump one down the line as each cyl gets bored.
