The seal is one piece of ceramic, with an o-ring to the shaft, and a piece that is carbon, with an o-ring to the housing. The two mating faces are soooo flat that water molecules won't get forced between them. Well, just enough to lube the faces. There is usually a spring inside pushng them together, to maintain the seal in a vacuum situation.
Fantastic leak proof high pressure system, used on a/c compressors too.
