I agree with Greg...get a 5 speed for sure if you plan to tow lots, the problem is that the First Gens had a Getrag, not the NV4500 with the 5th gear issues. The Getrag will blow up if you put much of a load on it...they were just a bad design. They held up better in the 2WD trucks but the 4WD they just don't hang in there unless your towing ping pong balls :)
Get a First Gen with the idea you're going to have to spend $3000 swapping the Getrag for an NV4500, which is pretty much as good as it gets if you get a newer one with the updated 5th gear nut.
Option B is get a 94-98 12V that already comes with the NV4500.
I'd rather have a First Gen any day...but that's just me.
