I own a transmission shop, I can tell you that you will not be happy with an automatic behind the cummins. The transmission can be built to hold up behind it, but it costs about $3500 to do it right. Also definately don't go with the 727 auto unless you have a lot of money to put out on transmission repairs. The 5 speed is great the only problem is they tend to blow the 5th gear off the back of the main shaft under heavy loads. There is an update for this, but it isn't a cure. I've seen many people with the update still blow 5th gear off the back under heavy loads and heavy acceleration. My opinion is the 5 speed is the better choice. What I've been doing for my customers is installing the 6 speed that came in the later dodges into the earlier 12valve dodges and that works very well. Its expensive, but in the long run well worth the effort.
