I had to pry the shaft upward when checking the endfloat to get it consistent. Tapered roller bearings need to be spun first to seat the bearings and then tap the shaft with a light hammer blow. Measure the upward shaft movement. The one I had on my WC63 rear had about 0.007" endfloat. I did grind this bearing down to obtain a preload again. I have not run this axle yet as I have just got my brakes and steering hooked up. Make sure that the inner large pinion bearing is not in contact with it's cup when you are checking the double one. I remember reading somwhere that a tapered roller bearing with side rock can be measured and a factor applied that will tell you the endplay as well. It's still best to check endfloat by measuring the endfloat axially. I have found that you can buy the duplex bearings cheaper by getting the inner double cup and buying two outer cones without the NA designation. Then measure the cone heights and assemble the bearing and measure the total height of the assemble. Subtract the two values and this should be shim thickness needed to go between the two cones. Subtract 0.001-0.002" for bearing preload and away you go. I will be doing this for next gearset rebuild. I can get the exact bearing numbers for you if required.
