Need info about Diff Pinion Bearings

I'm rebuilding the front third member of my 6x6, and the double bearing set on the pinion shaft has worn to the point that there is axial play in the pinion, about 0.006". I remembered that someone (Terry) had reground his used set of bearings and had good results. See link below:

The process I'm using to check the outer bearing is described in the M37 service manual, TM9-8031-2, paragraph 94e. using an oversize shim(s) behind the center pinion bearing so the large inner pinion bearing is not engaged in the cup.

My question is how can I get a reliable reading on the axial play in the pinion? With dry bearings, it appears that I have around 0.006" play, but the number is not always consistent. With the differential resting on the 4 cap studs, I spin the pinion till the bearings seat, then set the dial indicator on the end of the pinion and lift the pinion with both hands. Is this good enough, or is there a better way to get a good reading?
