Sounds like you have air trapped behind the thermostat . The thermostat may not open without water touching it ( at least I have had this happen on a gasser ) Some stats have a little hole in them to allow air to get by maybe it is plugged ?
You do not want to warp something . Bit of a pain driving out to Cummins through all that road work heh .
